Antonio Alarcó was first elected Senator in 2008 and has been reelected ever since. He has been President of the National Health and Social Welfare Commission of the Spanish Senate, Permanent Member of the Standing Committee at the Spanish Senate, Member of the Economy and Business Commission (XII, XI Legislature).
He also worked as Member of the European Commission (XII Legislature), Member of the Ibero-American Affairs Commission (XII, X Legislature), Member of the Special Commission on Demographic Evolution in Spain (XII Legislature), and President of the Human Genome and Personalized Medicine Study, among other positions.
He is Professor of Surgery at the University of La Laguna (Spain) and holds a PhD in Sociology with the thesis entitled: “Social Perception of User’s and Professional’s Health. Tourism Implications”. He also has a second PhD in Scientific Journalism within the Program of New Information Trends in the European Community with the thesis entitled: “Scientific Journalism in the Daily Press; Biomedicine Aspects”.
He is Vice President of the International College of Surgeons, Director of the Training Center in Robotics, Telemedicine and Telesurgery at the HUC – European Master in “Telemedicine & Bioengineering applied to Telemedicine”.
