Building Back Stronger: What can COVID-19 teach us about shock-proof progress?

On 10 June 2021, the Parliamentary Network on the World Bank and IMF held virtually a Parliamentary Meeting on Building Back Stronger, ahead of the G7 summit. The event constituted an opportunity for parliamentarians to take stock on policy measures that worked to mitigate the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as to learn from the fragilities exposed during the crisis

On 11th June, leaders of the world’s largest economies – the G7 – meet in Cornwall, United Kingdom, to discuss global action to ‘build back better’. But will ‘better’ mean fairer, greener, and stronger? Crucially, as the world moves from the pandemic to the goals of the Paris Agreements, will we build back in a way that helps us prepare for the shockwaves we can foresee, such as the rise of temperature, technology, and trade conflict?

In this important parliamentary meeting ahead of the G7 Cornwall Summit, the Parliamentary Network on the World Bank and the IMF brings together parliamentarians from around the world with World Bank and IMF representatives and other experts to discuss:

• During the COVID pandemic, what policy responses worked well – and what didn’t? What did we learn about both our strengths and fragilities?

• What should policy makers build on to create more shock-proof societies for the years ahead?

• What are the implications for both domestic policymakers and international financial institutions?
